Dripping with sweat in the mid-morning sun, Joe and Yui showed me the impressive gateway into the Imperial City. They explained that it was built in the 17th century by the feudal Nguyen Dynasty emperors, and served as the national capital from 1802 to 1945. Deep within these walls was the Forbidden Purple City where only the emperor, his concubines, and their servants could access; the punishment for trespassing was death.

In this fifth volume, I will be discovering opulent royal palaces and riverside Buddhist pagodas while touring the ancient capital city of Hue. When I arrived, I had the good fortune to meet two local college students, Joe and Yui, who were keen to guide me around the Forbidden Purple City. Adding a personal perspective on modern Vietnamese culture, it reveals the surprising political opinions of my new friends, as well as my own reflections on their tyrannical history.

Vietnam Travel Magic #5 Forbidden City of Hue eBook Scott David Plumlee Reviews
What wonderful adventures this author takes us on. I enjoy beautiful photography and learning from the
"locals" and I think Scott does a great job of this. I will be telling others if they are in search of a great travel book!
Scott,
I always take pleasure in reading books that take me away. Your photo journey #5 did just that. Your photos seem to draw me into the space, not just observing them. Your journey series are great teasers for those of us that wish we were there. Keep up the good work.

I loved the exotic locations and beautiful photography. Well done. I especially love the easy way you meet new friends and include them in your adventures. Thank you for sharing your travels with us.
Continue along with Scott David Plumlee's journey through Asia and see the sights that he has visited! The photography is amazing, and the story enthralling. For those of us not able to travel as Scott does, this is a real treat.
Plumlee describes his travel in the former imperial city. The palace was destroyed by American bombing during the Vietnam War, but the grounds and a few fragments and reconstruction remain. He visits other sites as well, also represented with striking photos.
Here's another short Backpacker Journey by this young, American Adventurer. In this travelogue, Scott takes us to the forbidden city of Hue, the Imperial City of Emperors past. His photos reveal the fading glamour of times long ago, and the short nuggets of history are fascinating to history buffs like me. I will never get to see places like the Rainbow River or the Hall of Supreme Harmony in real life, but I can still enjoy them through the Backpacker Series by Scott David Plumlee.
As with all of Scott David Plumlee's Backpacker books, Journey # 5 is filled with stunning photos, rich history, and a personal and personable account of the most amazing adventure. David has a true gift for sweeping you along on his travels - you can almost hear him talking to you along the way. Set aside some time, make yourself comfortable, and let him take you through the fascinating Forbidden City Of Hsu. You'll enjoy every minute.
